Doug took square dance lessons in 1980 and started calling in 1982. The Central Iowa Callers Association at that time sponsored a 2-year apprenticeship program with Merlin Cook as the leader and teacher. Jim Logan sponsored and mentored Doug through that. Since that time Doug has called at numerous square dance clubs around the Midwest, many Iowa State Square Dance Conventions, several other state, and national square dance conventions.
Doug has recorded for Eagle Records, Quadrille Records, and currently records with Solid Gold Records. Doug teaches for the Lads and Lassies in Knoxville, IA, Petticoats Junction club in Humeston, IA and the Ankeny Squares in Ankeny, IA.
Doug was inducted into the Iowa Caller Hall of Fame in 2009. He is currently Vice President of the Iowa Caller, Cuer, and Instructors Association.
Doug and his wife Judy are members of the American Callers Association, Iowa Callers, Cuers, and Instructors Association, Southeast Iowa Callers and Cuers Association, and members of the 3 clubs he teaches for.
Doug and Judy are both retired and like to travel to see their children and families in Florida, Colorado, and Wisconsin as well as Iowa. Doug enjoys playing golf and calling square dances in Iowa and surrounding states.
